FIT 2 WIN 2010 Healthy Living Tip #9 Be in it for the Long Term

Successful weight loss: be in it for the long term

Crash diets and unsustainable exercise routines will not keep you at your desired weight for the long term. You need to focus on realistic, acheivable goals - behavior modification that you can live with for years, instead of just weeks. For an example, let's say that a hypothetical person is ten pounds overweight, but at perfect energy balance - they eat exactly as many calories as they burn every day, so their weight remains constant. If that person sacrifices one small snack that they have every day, let's say a handful of chips equaling 100 calories, over the course of a year that person will lose over ten pounds! A pound of fat on your body represents 3500 stored calories. 100 calories X 365 days in a year = 36,500 calories, or over ten pounds of fat. Small changes can make a big difference in your health.

Exercise and Physical Activity: What’s the Difference?

Learn the difference between physical activity and exercise, and how each can contribute to physical fitness.

Physical activity is defined as movement that involves contraction of your muscles. Any of the activities we do throughout the day that involve movement — housework, gardening, walking, climbing stairs — are examples of physical activity.

Good Conversation Can Boost Brain Power, Study Finds

(HealthDay News) — Friendly discussions with other people can help you solve common life challenges, but conversations that are competitive in tone aren’t helpful, finds a new study.

“This study shows that simply talking to other people, the way you do when you’re making friends, can provide mental benefits,” lead author Oscar Ybarra, a psychologist and researcher at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan, said in a university news release.

FIT 2 WIN 2010 Healthly Living Tip #8 Small Changes Makes for Long Term Results

8: Lose weight slowly with small changes

Try to remember that "losing 15 pounds in two weeks" is nothing to celebrate. It is important to realize that the more quickly weight is lost, the more likely the loss is coming from water and muscle, not fat. Since muscle tissue is critical in keeping our metabolism elevated, losing it actually leads to a decrease in the amount of calories we can each day without gaining weight. Fat loss is best achieved when weight is lost slowly. Strive for a weight loss of no more than 1-2 pounds per week. One pound of weight is equivalent to 3500 calories. By making small changes like eliminating 250 calories a day from food and expending 250 calories a day from exercise, you can lose one pound (of mostly fat) per week. You can calculate your caloric needs by clicking here, and then subtract 250 from that number.

Your first few weeks of weight loss on a tough diet regimen will be high, but try not to exceed 3-4 pounds per week after your third or fourth week into your program. Muscle loss can be detrimental to your goal and your health.

FIT 2 WIN 2010 Healthly Living Tip #7 Portion Control

7. Weight loss and portion control

With the advent of "super-size" meals and increasingly huge portions at restaurants, our concept of normal serving sizes is a distant memory. Be mindful of the amounts of food you consume at a sitting. When necessary, divide your food in half and ask for a take home bag. It is all too easy to be a "plate cleaner" even when served enormous portions. Learn to pay attention to your hunger level and stop eating when you feel comfortably full, not stuffed.

Helpful hint: Drink a full glass of water or any sugar free beverage before any meal to cut down on any binging.

FIT 2 WIN 2010 Healthly Living Tip #6 Get Support

6. Weight loss support: join a weight management group

A big key in long term weight control comes from receiving encouragement and support from others. You can check to see if groups such as Jenny Craig offer programs and resources in your areas. You may also wish to check with your local hospital to see if their registered dietitian conducts group weight loss programs. You have to know that others are out there for moral support – they know things that you couldn’t possibly know, and they’ve probably been “in your shoes” at some point in the past (or present). Share stories, laughter, tears, successes, and failures – share them. There are thousands of communities out there, so keep looking until you find the one that fits you.

FIT 2 WIN 2010 Healthly Living Tip #5 Find Out Why You Overeat

5. Find out why you overeat or choose the wrong foods

All too often overeating is triggered by stress, boredom, loneliness, anger, depression and other emotions. Learning to deal with emotions without food is a significant skill that will greatly serve long term weight control. The Solution, a book and national program developed by Laurel Mellin, RD, helps participants to identify their eating triggers and respond to them without food. A research study showed that the participants in this program demonstrated a better rate of long term weight loss maintenance than those who simply diet and/or exercise and don't address behavioral and emotional issues. Chronic over-eaters and "emotional eaters" can be significantly helped by learning new behavioral skills such as those Mellin presents. You can also seek help with behavioral and emotional eating issues from a licensed counselor or psychologist in your area.

FIT 2 WIN 2010 Healthly Living Tip #4 Stay Focused on Being Healthy

4. Stay focused on being healthy, not on becoming thin

Many people become more successful at long term weight loss when their motivation changes from wanting to be thinner to wanting to be healthier. Change your mindset to think about selecting foods that will help your body's health rather than worrying about foods that will affect your body's weight. The Food Pyramid offers a basic outline of the types and amounts of food you should eat each day to give your body the nutrients it needs for optimal health.

FIT 2 WIN 2010 Healthly Living Tip #3 Keep a Food and Activity Diary

3. Keep a diary for triggers that hinder weight loss

Keeping a food diary can be a huge asset in successful weight loss. Devote some time each day to record what you have eaten and how much, your hunger level prior to eating, and any feelings or emotions present at the time. A food diary can provide a large amount of self-awareness. It can identify emotions and behaviors that trigger overeating, foster greater awareness of portion sizes, and help you discover your personal food triggers. Study any patterns that emerge from your food diary and identify where you may be able to make more healthful changes. A food diary provides an added benefit of keeping you focused on and committed to your goals. Start keeping a food diary today by printing our food diary.

I have added a link to a printable diary that will get you started on the right track.

FIT 2 WIN 2010 Healthly Living Tip #2 Weight Loss and Weight Training

2. Weight loss and weight training

We chose to list this separately from the "exercise" category because of the significant weight loss benefits attached to weight training in and of itself. The basic equation is this: the more muscle tissue you have, the more calories you will burn. This is why world class weight lifters must eat thousands of calories a day to maintain their weight. Muscle is active tissue, fat is not. Thus, muscle "burns" a significant number of calories each day for its own maintenance. In her book Strong Women Stay Slim, Miriam Nelson, a Tufts University researcher, showed that a group of women who followed a weight loss diet and did weight training exercises lost 44% more fat than those who only followed the diet. While aerobic activity can help burn calories, muscle's where it's at when it comes to giving your metabolism a significant daily boost even at rest.

FIT 2 WIN 2010 Healthly living tip #1 Exercise is Essential

1. Exercise is essential for weight loss

It's nothing new, but exercise is probably the most important predictor of whether you will succeed at long term weight loss and weight loss maintenance. In order for exercise to be helpful in weight loss, you should strive for a minimum of five 30 minute sessions per week. The good news is that recent research has shown that three 10 minute sessions in a day are as good as one 30 minute session. This helps many in combating the old "no time for exercise" excuse. Be certain to find something you enjoy. You'll be more apt to stick with it. Try walking with a friend, joining an intramural sports league, participating in outings with a group like or trying some classes at your local gym. Once you give exercise a chance, you will begin to enjoy its positive benefits on your psyche as well; you will literally become "hooked."

Atlanta's new money waste system

So, Atlanta is set to begin contruction on a new streetcar system that will basically go everywhere that MARTA goes already. This new transportation system will take mainly tourist to the main attractions throughout the city which are the district that includes the Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca-Cola, Centennial Olympic Park and the future Center for Civil and Human Rights, and the King Center. The 2.6 route will beginning on the west end of the loop at Centennial Olympic Park, the modern, electric-powered streetcar will run along Luckie Street past the Tabernacle and Woodruff Park, then along Edgewood Avenue. It will then turn left onto Jackson Street, left on historic Auburn Avenue, and head back west.

Naturally, I had to ask why not put this $72 million into MARTA versus to this purely cosmetic streetcar venture? Especially, when MARTA has been begging for monies for the past few years. The Metro Atlanta citizens that are being hit very hard by MARTA's budget cuts and fare increases are not being considered in this new venture that the city has taken. Oh, by the way, did I mention that this new streetcar system will be run by MARTA itself. The single ride fare for the streetcar will be $3 which is compatible with the MARTA Breezecard.

The justification that the City of Atlanta uses for putting federal funds into a meaningless venture is the potential for new jobs and community leaders say the line could help reconnect downtown and Sweet Auburn, a link that was severed when the interstate was constructed. While MARTA has been crying financial distress and putting the burden on its patrons, is the streetcar a smart decision?

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert: the Voices of Reason and Truthiness

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert: the Voices of Reason and Truthiness

These two ushered in a whole new genre of media. Which, in my eyes, are more respectible that that of other "formal" media outlets. The brash honesty of Stewart and Colbert brings a fresh light to the unaccountable finger pointing posed by the major media outlets.

On a side note - Can we get a female version of Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart?

Are we playing the victim or being targeted?

A recent article on CNN money indicates that Black America is being hit the hardest by the fallen housing market. Home ownership among Black Americans have plummeted  over 6 percent since the impact of the recession. But, that news was not as shocking to me as the comments made by readers clearly of other races. Its is often stated that blacks play the race card too often and cry "victim" rather than owning up to their bad decisions. Yet, these critics have not had first hand experience of what it means to be black, they have not had the pleasure of having a loan denied based on the color of the skin, they have not been denied jobs based on assumptuous individuals that sterotype blacks based on their ethnicity.

"I've got an idea - PAY YOUR BILLS! I lived with a black woman once, and she gave me the second half of the old joke: "Once you go white, yo credit gets right." If you are not responsible financially, don't expect the banks to operate an extension of welfare."

"I'm offended by the whole black in America section CNN has going. Isn't that racists to begin with. Let's re-title. White in America. Oh NO! Can't have that. That's racists. Equality. That's what it's all about. Can't help that blacks over extend themselves more than others. Bling Bling!"

In a perfect world we would all like to believe that racism does't exist and integration change the world. but, unfortunately, the same system that oppressed the African American Diaspora is still alive and well today. Why would I want to cry "racist injustice" unnecessarily. Would you blame a rape victim for being assaulted and violated, I hope not. So, why blame Blacks for being "picked on" by the dinosaurs that run this country. I wish race was not a factor, but the reality is that race effects several outcomes.

Tragedy in Pakistan - More than 400 people dead in Pakistan flooding

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- Flooding caused by monsoon rain has killed more than 400 people across Pakistan, a provincial government official said Friday.
Mian Iftikhar Hussain, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province information minister, said the death toll is now 408 people in that province and 25 in Pakistani-controlled Kashmir.
Qamar-uz-Zaman Chaudhry, the head of the Pakistan meteorological department, told CNN the 300 mm, or 11.8 inches, of rain recorded in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the most ever in Pakistan.
Many of the victims died when floodwaters swept away hundreds of mud houses in parts of Swat Valley and the districts of Shangla and Tank, according to Bashir Ahmed Bilour, a provincial minister in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Rushing water also has washed away thousands of acres of crops and dozens of government buildings, local businesses and schools, Bilour said.
Hussain said floodwater has cut off the Swat Valley and the districts of Shangla and Peshawar. There is no way to get to these areas by road, he said.
Earlier Friday the head of Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority said flooding had killed at least 150 people and injured 90 since Wednesday. Retired Lt. Gen. Nadeem Ahmed said 90 people were still missing.
The Pakistani Air Force is helping with rescue efforts, spokesman Tariq Yazdanie said in an interview on Pakistani TV.
The recent torrential rains have broken all previous records of rainfall in the country, he said.
The U.N. refugee agency dispatched the first shipment of aid for flood victims in the region Thursday, the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan reported.
APP said the supplies include 585 tents, 2,700 plastic sheets, 1,760 kitchen sets and 4,000 plastic mats.
At the same time, a top official in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province pressed Pakistan's president for help, according to APP.
The news agency said Assembly Speaker Karamatullah Khan told legislators he had asked President Asif Ali Zardari for a supply of emergency boats.
Photographs from Getty Images showed flood victims struggling to cross a swollen river in the town of Nowshera. The pictures showed children being ferried across the water in overcrowded boats, and more able-bodied people helping the elderly to higher ground.
Supplies from the U.N. agency will go first to the two hard-hit villages of Talli and Sultan Kot in Sibi district, APP said.
The U.S.-based group Save the Children said it will distribute plastic sheeting for shelters, household supplies and hygiene kits to about 1,000 families over the next two days.

Rosie: President Obama Should Never Have Gone on The View

Former View co-host Rosie O'Donnell isn't too keen on President Barack Obama's decision to appear with the ladies of The View.

"I have mixed feelings about that," O'Donnell, 48, sniffed on her Sirius XM radio show Wednesday, the day before Obama's episode aired. (The President had pre-taped his appearance Wednesday.)

"I don't really think sitting presidents should go do fluffy daytime TV shows. Maybe an hour on Oprah or something," O'Donnell sniffed.

"I don't really want to see him on The View, although I'm happy for them," she added. "That's a good booking, and Barbara [Walter's] going to come back that day after her heart surgery."

The comedienne co-hosted The View in 2006 but dropped out within the year after butting heads with other women on the show during heated political debates.

During Obama's appearance on the show, the women of the show chatted with him about important political, international and social issues -- plus lighter fare, too.

Asked whether he was aware of Lindsay Lohan's current stint in jail, the Commander in Chief replied: "I actually know that, yes." Not on his radar? Jersey Shore's Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi. "I gotta admit, I don't know who Snooki is."

He became tongue tied when asked about Mel Gibson, whose alleged, obscene audio tapes have stormed the web over the past couple weeks . After stammering, he uttered that he "hadn't seen the tapes."

Shopping No Longer a Therapy

For many Americans, the recession has hit a little too close to home. Those of us that have used shopping as a stress release, are now forced to sit back and only dream. Many American have either lost fifty percent or even one hundred percent of the household income. Forced into foreclosure, repossession, eviction or event bankruptcy, simple pleasures have gone down the drain with the American dream.

To maintain a household and keep up appearances, we must purchase consume goods. The difference now, is the price tags. We pay much more attention to the account balances, sale prices, bargains and shopping priorities. Whether shopping for groceries, household goods, clothes, school supplies, furniture or luxuries, we now go to war with our selves as to what to buy now or hold off until last minute.

Even if your income was not effected, we all love a deal. Recession proof deals will keep the guilt out of shopping and living.

With a well thought out plan and trusted resources, these tight times can become more bearable. Throughout the month I will be posting great family friendly sales, deals and recession proof websites.

Please feel free to place a recession proof site or deal in the comment box and I will add it to the post.

Stay tuned...
